The all new Campus

Between 2012 and 2022, the Medical Faculty in Pilsen (LFP) at Charles University in Prague underwent an extraordinary transformation. This period marked the construction of a new university campus, specifically designed and built for the needs of medical education and research for the first time.

The First Construction Phase: A Modern Start

Prior to this project, the buildings where medical education took place were spread across the city and originally designed for other purposes. These buildings were acquired after World War II and adapted to the needs of the faculty. In total, there were seven different buildings. However, from 2012 onwards, this changed with the beginning of the construction of the new campus, located right next to the University Hospital in Pilsen in Lochotín, where clinical training takes place, and near the Bolevecké dormitories, where students can live.

In the first phase of construction, a modern seven-story building was created, housing seminar rooms, laboratories, and offices for faculty members. This building now serves as the home for five theoretical institutes: pharmacology, pathology, physiology, biology, and biophysics. Due to financial constraints, the planned auditorium was not initially built, but in 2016, it was eventually completed through alternative funding sources.

The Research Center and Animal Facility

Additionally, two other buildings were constructed, housing a research center and an animal facility. These buildings together form a unique science center in the Pilsen region, specializing in biomedicine.

The Move: A New Beginning for the Faculty

In spring 2022, the new building began to be equipped with furniture and technology. The move to the new building took place in two phases during the summer of 2022. First, the theoretical institutes and facilities moved from the old buildings. Afterward, the move of the faculty's dean’s office followed. During the summer months, vast amounts of documents, books, and other materials were transported into the new spaces. By the end of the summer, the latest technical equipment was also delivered.

Financing: A Major Effort

The construction and equipping of the main buildings were made possible through multiple sources of funding. These included state subsidy programs, funds for the expansion of university infrastructure, as well as the faculty’s and university's own resources. A major project to develop educational infrastructure played a key role in financing. In addition, national programs supported the construction of the cafeteria and dean's office, as well as the equipment of the campus. Another project aimed to equip the simulation center, which is also housed in the new main building.

The total cost for the construction of the new buildings was approximately 1.53 billion CZK, with the technical equipment costing around 137 million CZK and the furniture and other facilities amounting to about 95 million CZK. Additionally, 35 million CZK were invested in the cafeteria's equipment. This new campus stands as an impressive testament to the ongoing development and dedication of the Medical Faculty in Pilsen. You can be proud to be part of an institution that has set a milestone in the history of Czech higher education with such forward-looking projects.
